Design As An Artform
There is an atavistic drive in human beings
to seek out progress.
It comes in many forms, from new fashion trends to inventive technological advancements to efforts to increase quality of life for human beings. We crave change just as much as we desire consistency and routine. Inside each person lives a traditionalist and a dreamer, this being the driving force in our never ending pursuit of balance and the blending of these contrary sides of our psyche.
Design blends these concepts beautifully when properly executed, though many aren’t aware of the monumental task that is bringing an impression into reality. The entire concept of design centers around fantasy. Think of the Model T, Rolls Royce Phantom and Cadillac Deville automotive lines. If you had never seen these cars, they would be total fantasy. Fashion extends even further, being interwoven into the very fabric of time as we know it. Textiles have been used to reference time periods, styles and trends before any of these concepts were even considered or understood.
These visions of a landscape completely different from the present one always came with traditionalists unwilling to accept something entirely novel and inherently frightened many with that newness. An investment nightmare, a business gamble, an advertising headache. And yet these designs are now added into the brickwork of the constantly growing framework of our world, things that we are able to pull from in our own creations and endeavors with relative assurance that they will turn out well due to their previous success.
That dreamer is still inside of us, influenced and inspired by the old and traditional to create something original, profound and influential for a new layer of foundation.
