What is a Legacy?

What do we leave behind after it’s all said and done?

Material goods eventually tarnish and fade. They naturally deteriorate over time and yet we value some of them in a way far removed from the object itself. Your great-grandmother’s cedar chest, grandfather’s books, or mother’s necklace, all priceless heirlooms that hold much more weight due to their personal meaning. The longevity of value is determined by the person holding them and the respect for the care required to maintain them. These are not things to be resold or forgotten, but to remind us of what we hold close, what we value. They are symbols of what we believe in when fleeting interests inevitably fall away.

The idea of our Legacy Collection is that of paying homage to countless centuries of tailoring. The House of Grand Design seeks to celebrate designers who have both innovated and carried the sartorial torch.

We want to provide some visibility for hand crafted clothing which often goes unseen and highlight the usefulness of what can sometimes feel like an unappreciated and ailing artform.

Just a few decades ago, you didn't need to travel far to find a skilled tailor for anything from a small alteration to a fully customized piece. Now it has become much rarer. Because of this, the knowledge of the trade is literally dying out with tailors who simply don't have the interest of younger people to give this knowledge to. Our aim is to use bespoke techniques in ready to wear clothing to show the benefits to a new generation.

Why maintain a Legacy?

When we are actively cognizant of a legacy we make the decision to preserve a culture, to place intrinsic value on tradition and longevity. We create a solid foundation for others to continue honoring a trade. Like any other tradition, it takes care and attention to maintain. Without the choice to keep it alive it fades into memory. Our robust and diverse forms of art and trade are what make our world so invigorating.

A legacy could be a story, a song, a gesture, a style. It defines the common thread in a lineage, related by blood or interest. A legacy is a culmination of everything that you do on a daily basis and is defined by what we choose to nurture.

We at The House of Grand Design want to leave behind a legacy built on belief in design and artistry.

Above all else, a legacy endures.
